B Patisserie Gets an A+
On a recent business trip to California, my colleague and I had to visit our Emeryville office. While the office has a beautiful view, it is situated in a bit of a culinary wasteland, with Chevy's being the only restaurant within walking distance. While I love those chips that come hot off the conveyor belt, I did not want to waste a Cali meal on a chain restaurant.
Since we had to travel back to the Peninsula for a meeting later in the day, it only made sense to stop in San Francisco. My co-worker had heard good things about b patisserie from friends and online. It seemed like kismet when we drove up and found a parking spot right across from the bakery on busy California Street.
Rarely have I been so overwhelmed by a display of baked goods. I have a decent sweet tooth, but am definitely more of a savory gal. However, everything here just looked so good. My eyes were jumping from item to item in the case. I knew a to-go box was in my future, no matter how awkward it would make the plane ride home.
The lunch menu is fairly small. Mostly an assortment of tartines, those lovely French open-faced sandwiches. In the interest of discovery, we chose different sandwiches with promises to share. I ordered the mushroom with goat cheese and my colleague ordered a Caprese variety. Of course, on such simple sandwiches each component is critical. These were outstanding. Flavorful bread with just the right texture, impeccably fresh toppings and light dressing.
After lunch we both loaded up on treats for our families. I was unable to take any of the delicious tarts because of my overnight journey to the east coast ahead. However, I did purchase shortbread, gingerbread, a baguette, chocolate chip cookies, and several varieties of Kouignn Amman, the delectable Breton pastry (front and center in the photo below) .
Everything was pronounced "amazing" by my discerning family of pastry critics. Not too sweet and wonderful texture. I have to agree and give B an A+.
